Oh, the irony! After a four-day weekend spent eating chocolate, roast dinners, hot cross buns and yet more chocolate, now sunny days are just around the corner, our bodies aren’t ready to go on show.

Thank heavens then for a timely new trend: spring shapewear.

We’ve all got a pair or two of heavy-duty Bridget Jones pants to wear under Christmas cocktail dresses, but there’s a new generation of miracle workers hitting the High Street that won’t make you sweat on a warm day.

New from Spanx — the shapewear brand beloved of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow (as if she needs them) — is the Lust Have slip, 55.

This trims waists and slims thighs beneath the shortest of summer skirts, yet it is ultra-lightweight so it won’t make you hot or, so the makers say, cling to flimsy fabric.

If anyone knows how to fix figures in soaring temperatures it’s the Brazilians. Plie is one of the country’s top shapewear brands and the entire range is made using fabric that draws perspiration away from the skin.

You’ll find a good selection at Prices start from 15 — but be warned, these are not the prettiest of pieces.

If love is in the air, don’t despair. Be grateful instead that the Rolls-Royce of lingerie brands, Prima Donna, has just unveiled a beautiful collection of summer shapewear that is designed to be seen (from 45.95,

There are pretty contour briefs and G-strings that fit like a second skin, slimming tummies, waists and thighs. The elegant Body Shaper, 79.95, smoothes out back fat while managing to be very easy on the eye.

But the ultimate in sexy figure-fixers has to be the sassy Contour Dress (66.95), which is designed to be invisible under clothes and yet is almost too beautiful to hide. We’re talking Elizabeth Taylor in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof — you’ll look so hot you won’t want to hide it away.
