Cleanse with benefits: The latest all-in-one face washes do more than just take off your make-up

Whether you’re in a mad hurry to leave the house in the morning or desperate to get into bed after a long day, washing your face and applying moisturiser can feel like a real chore.
But a new wave of super-cleansers is set to change all that. ‘The latest products don’t just remove pore-clogging impurities and make-up,’ says consultant dermatologist Dr Susan Mayou. ‘Many new formulas are now able to exfoliate, nourish and anti-age your skin all in one step.’
But how can a cleanser, which you wash off your face barely 60 seconds after you’ve applied it, provide skin-enhancing benefits
Use a new SPF 15 cleanser to protect your skin from the sun
‘The key innovation is a smart new “wash-on technology” that deposits beneficial ingredients which bind to the skin cells and remain there after the cleanser has been removed,’ explains Dr Mayou.
With a slew of new cleansers hitting beauty counters in the coming months, it’s important to identify your needs and select the right product.
For more radiant skin, try the new Shu Uemura Ultime8, which has a lightweight, oil-based formula that washes off stubborn make-up.
Costly but worth it, this blend of eight botanical oils includes pigmentation-fighting ginger root and brightening shea butter, which form a skin-enhancing sheen on your face.
The product is so nourishing you don’t even need to moisturise afterwards. However, if your skin is very dry or sensitive, there are newly-developed cleansers that can help soothe redness.
Avene Micellar Lotion (12.50, avene.co.uk) deposits moisturising ingredients that cling to the skin to protect against dryness and irritation, while gently lifting dirt at the same time.

If your sensitive skin is prone to breakouts, try the new Ren ClearCalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser, which uses manuka honey extract to control acne and chamomile oil to nourish. This clever face wash, its makers claim, also tackles fine lines and restores skin suppleness.
The Astalift Moisture Foam Cleanser uses very fine-milled particles to deliver powerful ingredients such as the skin-protecting antioxidant astaxanthin, plus water-soluble collagen to restore elasticity and vitamin E, helping the skin to look more luminous.
Out this week, the BeautyLab Glycowash (32, beautylabshop.com) is perfect for tired complexions. It rinses away debris and exfoliates, while its gel-like formula leaves behind a traceless coating of glycolic acid and pomegranate enzymes on the skin.
These active ingredients work on your skin for up to eight hours, fading pigmentation and diminishing fine lines. Apply your normal moisturiser or night cream after cleansing for added bounce.
Soap-based cleansers have also evolved and the latest complexion-friendly bars no longer strip away the skin’s protective oils, but work to restore moisture. A stand-out product is the multi-tasking Cor Silver Soap (15, corsilver.co.uk) — great for combination skin types.
The tiny particles penetrate the pores, carrying with them antibacterial silver to reduce spots, marine collagen to plump, sericin (a moisture-binding silk protein), chitosan (a natural fibre that evens out skin tone), and hyaluronic acid. It is so hydrating you don’t need moisturiser.
Cleansing wipes are also becoming more sophisticated. The newly launched Skyn Icelandic Glacial Cleansing Cloths (12.50, marksandspencer.com) are ideal for irritable and dry skins. When rubbed together, the wipe develops a foaming lather to whisk away make-up.
Even more advanced super-cleansers are expected over the coming months. London-based cosmetic dermatologist Dr Mario Luca Russo’s Sun Protective Day Cleanser (35, the rejuvenationclinic.co.uk) arrives in September.
It’s designed to wash away impurities while leaving a protective layer of SPF 15 on the skin that helps protect skin from ageing UV rays.
The most exciting thing about these new cleansers is not what they remove, but the lasting benefits they leave on our skin.
