'Can you spot the difference' Claire's Accessories accused of copying trendy jeweller's designs
Trendy, East London-based jewellery company, Tatty Devine, is known for its quirky oversized pendants. And it seems that it is not only the fashion set who have taken to their designs.
Claire's Accessories has started selling astonishingly similar necklaces – but at a fraction of the cost.
Tatty Devine drew attention to the copycat designs on their blog in a post entitled 'Can you spot the difference'.
Astonishing similarity: Tatty Devine's gold dinosaur (left) and the Claire's Accessories version
Within 24 hours, Claire's Accessories was trending on Twitter, leaving Tatty 'truly heartened and impressed by the amazing response on this issue.'
The jeweller's initial post read: 'No, that’s not your eyes going funny. We haven’t launched a bright pink version of our Dinosaur Necklace.
'The necklace on the left is Tatty Devine. The necklace on the right is currently being sold by Claire’s Accessories.'
Celebrity favourite: Tatty Devine has been worn by everyone from Jessie J to Claudia Schiffer
Inspired by or copycat Tatty Devine's 39 fishbone necklace (left) and the 4 Claire's version
The added: 'That’s our Fishbone Necklace on the left… and a necklace we bought last weekend at Claire’s on the right.'
The resemblance is certainly uncanny, and hundreds took to twitter to complain.
Eve Bottomley tweeted: 'Claire's Accessories you should be ashamed!'.
Liquid_rev added: 'So… it would appear that your company is a bunch of thieves Care to comment'
Trademark design: Tatty Devine's famous moustache pendant also seems to have been ripped off
But some tweets were in support of the accessories chain.
Emma Smyth wrote: 'Fair play to #claire's Accessories, Tatty Devine thinks people are actually gonna pay 150 quid for a necklace.'
The gold Dinosaur Necklace which is at the centre of the copy cat row is on sale for 114 or 132 on Tattydevine.com.
Claire's version is no longer available on their website, but their most expensive necklace costs just 14.
Going bananas: A fruity Tatty pendant (left) and a similar Claire's version
Tatty's fishbone perspex necklace costs 39. While Claire's version – which was made in China – retails at 4.
Georgia Langford of Handbag.com argues that the chain's imitations do not only affect the company's sales, but also their name.
She said: 'Claire’s decision to copy Tatty Devine designs, manufacture them in China and sell them cheaply in their stores not only takes sales away from Tatty Devine, but also damages their brand.
Looking into it: A Claire's Accessories spokesman said they were investigating the allegations of copying
'Judging by their blog comments, lots of people save up to purchase a classic Tatty Devine piece, so to be able to buy a cheap knock-off in Claire’s isn’t quite as aspirational.
'The Claire’s jewellery will be of far inferior quality, which won’t reflect well on the Tatty Devine originals.'
A Claire's Accessories spokesman said they were investigating the allegations of copying.
