Clair Huxtable, style icon: Cosby Show matriarch is star of new blog
Huxtable hit: Clair Huxtable, played by Phylicia Rashad, is hailed as an Eighties style goddess
Who”d have thought The Cosby Show, pillar of many an American childhood – for those born in the late Seventies, at least – would become the latest fashion inspiration
The sitcom is the subject of several new fashion blogs, all of whom now hail the sophistication of its Eighties wardrobe choices, almost twenty years after the show”s finale.
Indomitable matriarch Clair Huxtable, played by Phylicia Rashad, is the star of Clair Huxtable: Mom Style Icon.
There, the Tumblr blog”s writer froths about the star”s broad shoulder pads, spilling pleating, bunched sleeves, “bad attitude” and floppy ensembles.
It turns out, more than two decades after the show”s heyday, that the Huxtables” Brooklyn Heights brownstone, scene of many a memory, was home to some smart wardrobe choices, too.
While deferentially nodding towards Cliff”s wife, the blog”s writer, Chloe Wepper, pokes a bit of fun towards the era”s idiosyncrasies – swathes of gold lam, over-the-top batwings and shoulder pad upon shoulder pad all make it onto the list.
In one post, Ms Wepper enthuses over a purple wrap-around creation, as worn by Clair to visit – in true Cosby Show plot style – Stevie Wonder”s recording studio.
“It’s genius—part kaftan, part dress, part kimono, part body sleeve, partextra-long vest, and all INCREDIBLE,” writes the blogger.
“How did she get in this thing Where does it start Where does it end”
Other favourited outfits include Mrs Huxtable”s sleek, satin nightwear – the busy mother even makes pyjamas look sophisticated – and the “ethnic themed aqua ensemble” that includes none other than blue stirrup leggings.
Trendy track suit: The mother-of-five sports everything from gold lame frocks to baggy track suits in the Cosby Show, alongside Bill Cosby. Her style is now the subject of two blogs
Excitement over Clair”s wardrobe, however, is not limited to Ms Wepper. Clair”s Closet, another blog dedicated to the Brooklyn attorney”s style, notes her Robin Hood-esque tassels and the witty “Tory Burchleneck” motif design of one of Clair”s turtlenecks.
One shot, according to Clair”s Closet, sees her dressing as a “Mod North Pole elf infused with a Rothko painting,” while another is the “epic win” of Clair”s kaleidoscope kaftan.
Fashion being cyclic, and this being NewYork City, the Cosby Show”s wardrobe choices are once again de rigueur, with many of today”s self-respecting Brooklyn hipsters pulling off similar looks in the very same neighbourhood.
But it”s not just Clair who has caught the attention of bloggers.
Family affair: The Cosby Show”s Denise Huxtable, bottom left, played by Lisa Bonet, is also the subject of a fashion blog – her oversize sweatshirts winning particular applause
Enterstage left, Denise. Daughter number two, the naturally stylish Miss Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet, sports – besides her on-trend threads – some forward-thinking hairstyles.
Blog Denise Huxtables shines a light onto the teen”s bygone outfits. Like her mother, Denise”s sartorial style, viewed now, takes many a 30-something-year-old straight back to their childhoods.
Her hi-top trainers, oversized sweatshirts, sassy takes on school uniform looks andcolourful earrings were the dreams of many a young Eighties girl – not to mention Denise”s younger sisters.
Who can forget the savage fight that broke out and floored Cliff, the inimitable Bill Crosby, after a favourite purple sweater wentmissing
