Expectant parents are splashing out 13 per cent more money on equipment for their new baby than they did three years ago, a new survey has revealed.

One reason for the huge increase is that couples are copying celebrity mothers-to-be who go on spending sprees in the weeks before their child's birth.

Couples now spend a whopping 2,538 preparing for their bundle of joy compared with 2,246 in 2009.

State-of-the-art prams and cots, nursery decorations and the latest toys and designer clothes are just some of the items parents are snapping up, according to department store Debenhams.

Their spokeswoman, Lizzie Singleton, said: 'Our research shows that expecting a baby turns usually savvy shoppers into spendthrifts.

'Over 64 percent of customers we spoke to said that they spared no expense when it came to baby preparation – with 39 percent admitting they were inspired by ‘A-list’ lifestyles.

'With increasing coverage of celeb mini-me’s like Blue Ivy, whose parents Beyonce and Jay Z reportedly spent a fortune on her arrival, it is no wonder the spending bar has lifted.'

The study found that British newborns have wardrobes worth 600 and a toy collection of around 180. An average of 463 is spent on nursery decorations.

An incredible 71 per cent of first-time parents rely on financial help from their own parents and other relatives to get ready for their new arrival.

Researchers say many first-time parents admitted that their spending spiralled out of control in their first year as a parent, resulting in debt.

One reason for this is a drop in household income as pregnant women go on maternity leave.

Mothers have been influenced by celebrity couples like Beyone and Jay Z , who paid out 2,170 for a cot, 372,000 for a rocking horse and spent 12,400 so far on their baby’s shoe collection.

Other famous couples like the Beckhams, Cruises and Jolie-Pitts have splashed out more than 600,000 on items like designer wardrobes, lavish baby showers and expensive private birthing suites.

Jennifer Lopez’s baby shower when pregnant with her twins reportedly came to 900,000.
