Our tester: 34B model Anel Odendaal in a non-artificial uplift bra
It’s the bra with an uplifting twist: a string between the cups that can be left loose during the day or tightened for an enhanced night-time cleavage.
Wonderbra’s Variable Cleavage Bra — first launched in 2000, but reissued last month with an improved design — is the latest in a new wave of push-up bras that promise to boost your cleavage without the discomfort of earlier versions.
Tony Jarvis, managing director at Gossard, says it reflects the fashion for more curvaceous figures.
‘Thanks to TV shows such as Mad Men, feminine looks are back,’ he says.
‘Current technologies allow push-up bras to be lighter than ever with a realistic enhanced cleavage.’
But can they really provide a non-surgical route to a bigger bust
Here, 34B model Anel Odendaal (pictured right without artificial uplift) puts them to the test…

Variable cleavage bra, 25.50, and briefs, 10.50, wonderbra.eu
HOW IT WORKS: Enhances your bosom by at least
one cup size using 'microbeads' inside the cups that push up the breasts. It can be worn with a cross-back or halter straps and goes up to a DD.
ANEL'S VERDICT: I love this. The big gap between the
cups and strong wire mean the breasts are pushed inward and up. For a deep cleavage, this is unbeatable.
HOW IT WORKS: This bra is supposed to take you from day to night by allowing you to vary your cleavage. You simply tighten the cord between the two cups when you want a more glamorous look
and the bra pulls your breasts together.
ANEL'S VERDICT: Sorry, this was the worst bra by far. The idea of being able to vary your cleavage without carrying a spare bra is a great idea, but it isn’t practical. When the cord was loose, I felt like I had no support at all. And when it was tight, it dangled down, which was really irritating. Worst of all, I felt it didn’t really enhance my cleavage even when it was tight.

HOW IT WORKS: Put the silicone pads in the bottom of your cups to give you a subtle lift.
ANEL'S VERDICT: These are easy to put in and give a nice lift. They turn any bra into a push-up, so are very good value.
HOW IT WORKS: It is 80 per cent nylon and 20 per cent elastane, so clamps firmly in place without shoulder straps. The back has a high-tech gel to
stop it slipping.
ANEL'S VERDICT: Under a shoulderbaring dress, this
is a great option for a natural lift. The back stays in place and it's comfortable, unlike some pinching strapless bras.

HOW IT WORKS: M&S says the padding gives a two cup boost. Cross the straps at the back for an
ANEL'S VERDICT: The padding was huge, but it easily
took me up to a D cup. The smooth fabric would work well under a T-shirt and the straps are flexible, so you can wear it every day.
HOW IT WORKS: A hidden sling in the cup and silicone inserts give a two-cup boost. The pouches move like real tissue and mould around the breasts to create a natural cleavage.
ANEL'S VERDICT: The gel inserts make this bra heavy. But it was comfortable, if not very versatile.
