British women hoard 156million bras with half admitting they own underwear they have never worn
No matter their size or shape, most women dread shopping for bras.
This makes it even more surprising that almost half of women have purchased bras they have never even worn.
According to research, a total of 156 million bras in Britain have gone to waste.
Unwanted: Many women do not use over half the bras they own
A poll of 2,000 women conducted by specialist retailer Sweatshop found that the average British female has a total of nine bras, but more than half of these are unused.
The most popular reason for the rejected undergarments was their lack of comfort, with a third of women saying they keep bras that are the wrong size.
Other women said their bras were unflattering, unfashionable or made their breasts look funny under certain clothes.
Sizing yourself up: One in ten women do not know their true bra size
The number of women unsatisfied with the fit of their bras is not surprising given that one in ten women surveyed did not know their real bra size and a third had never been properly measured.
Even more startling, 74 per cent of women do not try on bras before buying them because they are too embarrassed to get their breasts measured properly and over a quarter said they were currently wearing a bra that did not fit them properly.
The poll also found most women rotate the same three bras with more than half saying they owned a range of different sizes.
More than a quarter of women admitted to deliberately buying bras in a size too small to make their breasts look bigger.
Many also seemed unconcerned with having extra support for their chests while exercising, as 57 per cent of women said they did not regularly wear a sports bra when working out.
Head sports bra buyer for Sweatshop Amanda Brasher said: ‘Too many women are wasting money on bras that don’t fit, or fail to offer the right support. It is vital to get measured, especially if you are active or play sport, as an ill-fitting bra can potentially cause long term breast damage.
‘Women depend on their bras as something they will wear pretty much every day of their lives, so it’s important to invest in them wisely.
‘Most women own bras for different reasons whether it’s for everyday wear, exercise or bras for special occasions.’
