Losing weight often requires the moral support of someone close to you, and one man has rewarded his long-term love for standing by him in his weight loss battle by popping the question.
Kevin McLernon, who won Britain’s Biggest Loser earlier this year, has proved a winner in love after proposing to partner Joanne Chard who supported him through thick and thin as he shed an amazing 40 per cent of his body weight to be crowned ITV’s Biggest Loser 2012.
Millions tuned in earlier in the year to see Kevin take the title when his weight dropped from 32st 2lb to 19st 4lb.
Kevin McLernon was crowned the 'Biggest Loser' after losing nearly 13 Stone in just six months, he then proposed to his wife who supported him through the process
And spurred on by his new slim-line body Kevin, 39 finally found the confidence to propose to Jennifer, 35, who he met 10 years ago.
Kevin, who met Joanne when they literally bumped into each other in a crowded bar, said: 'We always had a good relationship, but my weight was like a big black cloud hanging over us.
'I didn’t feel like I could ask her, but now that has all lifted away.
'I’m so lucky to have her.'
The devoted couple from Seaburn, Sunderland, plan to tie the knot in October in a quiet ceremony abroad, before a party for family and friends in The Sage, Gateshead.
Kevin said: 'I had planned to propose when we were on holiday in France earlier this year because I thought it would be romantic, but the moment never seemed right.
'Funnily enough, the right time came when we were just sitting together at home on the settee talking and I just asked her.
'She said yes and started crying, we are both really excited about it.'
Since winning the show, Kevin has continued to work and train hard to maintain his new body
Joanne knew exactly which engagement ring she wanted – the one her late grandmother left her.
The bride-to-be said: 'Even though we had talked about marriage, it still came as a shock when he asked me.
'We are so happy. Before, Kevin’s weight was always a huge worry wondering what his health would be like, but now things have totally changed. He is a different person, so full of energy and we can look forward to the future.'
During the past few months Kevin has continued to train hard and is still losing weight.
His niece Amy McLernon from South Shields, took the runner-up spot on the ITV show with her weight dropping from 19st to 12st 11lb.
Kevin is due to qualify to be a personal trainer himself shortly and hopes to inspire other people to shed weight and turn their lives around.
