Viewers were left shocked when sisters Bristol and Willow Palin burst out with laughter when four-year-old Tripp used a homophobic slur.

The two women, both daughters of American politician Sarah Palin, burst out laughing when the little boy used the derogatory term during a temper tantrum.

Tripp called his aunt Willow a 'f*****', an offensive term more commonly used against homosexuals, during filming of Bristol's docu-series Life's A Tripp.

Having just checked into a hotel, her young son runs into the room excitedly and sees a swimming pool from his bedroom window.

The excited child then tells his mother that he wants to go down to the pool straightaway.

Bristol, 21, explains to him that it is bedtime and he should be tired after his long flight but Tripp won't take no for an answer.

As his mother looks out at the swimming pool she tells her son that she doesn't like the look of the 'drunk teenagers' hanging around the area.

Her sister Willow gives some back up and tells Tripp to calm down or he will be punished as he begins to lose his temper.

An angry Tripp then jumps on his mother's lap and tells her that he hates her before Willow picks him and threatens to send him to his room.

Undeterred, he then smiles before shouting at his aunt 'You f*****'.

Surprisingly, the sisters try and hold back their laughter rather than instantly telling Tripp not use such an abusive word.

Bristol later admits in the programme that 'I’m doing a terrible job disciplining Tripp', but many people will be concerned with where Tripp heard the word in the first place.

Numerous gay websites have reported on the footage with their readers commenting on how Lifetime, the same network which aired Will & Grace, Project Runway and Drop Dead Diva, has felt about running the controversial show.

Lifetime, which is considered a 'gay friendly' channel has been facing an uphill battle with Life's a Tripp losing its 10pm EST slot and only debuting with an audience of 726,000 viewers.

Gaystarnews.com reported that writers at Gawker had said: 'But there's a difference between a precocious utterance of 'f***' and a homophobic slur.

'The complete lack of shame is especially embarrassing given that there were cameras filming it all — gay-friendly Lifetime cameras, no less.'

It is not the first time the Palins have used the word as two years ago a 16-year-old Willow used many homophobic slurs including the word f*****, to abuse a Facebook user who criticised her mother's failed reality TV show.
