Q My fingernails are a constant problem, particularly in the winter. I hate them looking scaggy at Christmas parties so is there a regime I can follow to get them in shape
A We know the problem. Sunshine has a wonderful effect on nails, which is down to the vitamin D produced in the skin in response to ultra-violet light. Even Sarah’s notoriously fragile nails perk up and become strong and long(er). There are other factors too, so here’s a few tips to gorgeous nails for the party season. Remember that nails take several months to regrow their full length, so you must follow this regime daily, without fail, and be patient!
Try a targeted supplement, such as Imedeen Hair & Nails, with silica, biotin, and B vitamin complex, 23.49 for two months supply from Boots store nationwide.
Or, says pharmacist Shabir Daya, Bamboo Extract is a rich source of silica. He recommends Bamboo Extract by World Organic, 16.95 for 60 vegi-capsules, take one or two daily, from victoriahealth.com. (It does lots of other good things too, including helping teeth, hair, joints, and preventing wrinkles.)
Keep your nails oiled. This will have an immediate effect in terms of appearance and preventing more flaking and breaking. So… apply hand cream religiously every time you wash your hands, and massage in a couple of drops of oil at night.
Our favourite tried and tested hand and body cream is Seven Wonders Miracle Lotion, 14.50 from Victoria Health. (Just apply it everywhere for soft supple skin, one colleague swears by it for her face.)
Neem Nail Oil by Dr Hauschka, 24.95 for 30ml (will last for years), is a long-standing favourite. But you can actually use any oil you are applying to face or body – NB the massage is nearly as important as the oil.
Nail Magic by Jica, 9.95 for 7.4ml. This formula, developed in the Sixties by a professional manicurist in Oregon, is simply genius. Use it as a base or top coat, or as a clear polish. You need to apply it twice weekly for the first eight weeks, then once a week for maintenance.
Finally, remember to wear gloves for everything: washing-up, gardening, grooming horses or dogs, and whenever you go out in the chilly winter weather.
Et voila! Perfect nails…
