Although she narrowly missed out on the much coveted 2010 X Factor title to Matt Cardle that hasn't stopped Rebecca Ferguson from conquering her dreams.

The modest single mother from Liverpool has earned herself a 1 million record deal, has been the face of Nescafe and Walkers and was nominated for two MOBO awards and a MTV Europe award this year.

But despite the bright lights of fame and fortune, the 26-year-old singer has only one priority: her two children.

The mother-of-two, who has daughter
Lillie May and son Karl, ensures that she spends as much time as
possible with her children in between her singing duties.

'My kids are my number one. I work for my children. I never wanted them to see me fail so I went and studied law and trained in counseling and did everything I could for them.

'Luckily my dreams came true in music but we just have to do the best we can for our children. As long as they're happy, I'm happy,' she said in an exclusive interview with MailOnline.

Supporting her children is one thing the
singer takes extremely seriously and the whole reason she came to find
herself on X Factor in the first place

Reminiscing on where it all began, Rebecca says that she is a huge fan of this year's X Factor.

'I love Jahmene. He has overcome so much and he is a real hard worker.

'I also love Ella Henderson, she is so talented yet only sixteen; imagine what she will be like when she is twenty,' she said.

Although Rebecca was mentored by Cheryl Cole during her time on the reality show, the pair haven't kept in touch.

She said: 'Are Girl's Aloud doing a tour I didn't realise. I haven't seen or spoken to Cheryl since X Factor.'

Rebecca says her main priority is her two children Karl and Lillie May and that was the reason she auditioned for X Factor

Today Rebecca has plans to pen a novel and a
play, and the Liverpudlian has been getting plenty of practise by curating her own
little tales for story time with her children.

'I am currently working with Encouraging Kids to Read at Home campaign which I am really passionate about. I can't believe that nine per cent of parents read for their children for less than ten minutes a day.

'My best memories from childhood were story time so I make sure to tell my children stories. I make up a funny tale called the Ladybird Soup which they love,' she said.

And it seems that four-year-old Karl and Lillie May, 6, are following in their mother's creative footsteps.

'Karl
is very artistic and has a creative mind while Lille May is very
musical. I wouldn't necessarily advise her to follow in my footsteps but
if that's what she wanted to do I would support her,' she said.

In order to support her family following X Factor, Rebecca went to college to study to become a
legal secretary and discovered that she had an aptitude and a passion
for human rights law, eventually gaining distinctions in all her exams – a passion she hopes to develop one day.

Although Cheryl mentored Rebecca on the X Factor and the pair became close friends, they haven't spoken since

But
for now she is focusing on her singing career,

Her latest single,
Shoulder To Shoulder, is gaining radio play now, and she'll be releasing her album next
year.

One thing the singer can't wait for is Christmas and she is planning a big festive lunch for her friends and family.

While she is yet to purchase any gifts she has a simple wish list for Santa, reminding us why she won the nation's heart as the down-to-earth girl from Anfield.

She said: 'I am dead easy to please. I would be happy with pajamas and socks!'

Rebecca Ferguson is the face of Wonderbook: Book of Spells which is out on PlayStation3 on the 16th November.
